21st March 2009: Essiquibo’s Strange Fruit – This dramatic musical performance written by Helen MacDonald offers an interpretation of the life and music of Billie Holiday, capturing all the emotion of a musical icon through the fusion of song and the spoken word. Combining theatre and film through cutting-edge multimedia techniques and supported by Keith Waithe and the Macusi players the piece is woven together with spoken word relating to the tumultuous life and career that took Holiday from poverty to the New York jazz scene and the iconic status she holds today. Prepare to be moved as Helen, Keith and the Macusi players journey through songs that became Jazz Standards; Strange Fruit, God Bless the Child, Don’t Explain, Lover Man, Stormy Weather, Summertime and Good Morning Heartache.
